Youth Theatre

From its earliest days The Playhouse has recognized the value of offering plays for young audiences on our mainstage. In the 1980s this commitment was formalized into a popular program called The Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre.

The Jessica Herron Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Laguna Playhouse gratefully acknowledges the generosity of Dana Klein and Jay Herron, who have established The Jessica Herron Memorial Scholarship Fund in loving memory of their daughter, a former student of The Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre. This designated gift to the theatre’s permanent Endowment will provide annual scholarship assistance to talented young people seeking to expand their knowledge and skills through our youth conservatory.

If you would like information about The Jessica Herron Memorial Scholarship Fund, call Donna Inglima 949.497.2787, ext. 202.

The Youth Theatre Season offers plays primarily aimed at children
of elementary and middle school age. These may be existing plays
or musicals based upon well-known, popular books or stories, but we also sometimes commission new stageadaptations.

Hansel and Gretel and CinderellespacerHansel and Gretel and Cinderella

February 24 – March 4, 2012

By William Glennon
Directed by Kelly Herman

Two Enchanting Classic Fairy Tales told a-new! Hansel and Gretel is the story of two children left in the forest by their mother who has been put under a spell. With the help of the Bird and the Gnome, the children outwit the wicked witch who has imprisoned them and is fattening up Hansel to eat!

Cinderella has a step mother and two step sisters who make her do all the work in the house. When they go off to the Prince’s Ball, Cinderella is visited by her Fairy Godmother. Through kindness and a little magic, her Fairy Godmother makes it possible for Cinderella to go to the ball and win the heart of the young Prince.

Suitable for ages 5 and up.

Two things make the Youth Theatre Season unique in the region. First, the productions are directed and designed by theatre professionals and fully-mounted with the Playhouse’s technical resources. Second, the cast and staff for each production is drawn principally from our Youth Conservatory Program. Casting is almost always “age-appropriate.” Young people play young roles. Local amateur actors generally play the adult roles but fully professional Equity guest artists may also be cast.

The content of the plays is typically similar to G-rated or PG-rated films. To ease any parental concerns we explain the content in advance marketing materials and at point of ticket purchase.

And feel free to join our mailing list as well, and we'll keep you posted on upcoming Youth Theatre programs, performances and events.
